Visiting Research Scholars

The Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences (LML) welcomes scholars from around the world to visit us in Cambridge.

There are two main avenues for visiting: formal and informal.

Formal visits

Formal visits are offered under the title Visiting Research Scholar and are open to individuals who hold an academic post at another institution. These appointments require approval from the Faculty of Law and LML. Due to the high level of interest, places are limited and highly competitive.

Visits typically last between one and three months, and occasionally up to six months. For a monthly fee, the Faculty provides open-plan desk space, IT support and access to senior common room facilities. Further details are available on the Faculty’s Visitor webpage.

When sponsored by LML, Visiting Research Scholars are expected to focus on a significant research question of interest during their stay and to work towards a tangible output, such as a publication, conference paper, presentation or briefing report.

Informal visits

No formal approval is required for an informal visit to Cambridge. This option is particularly suitable for those planning a stay of less than three weeks, individuals who do not yet hold an academic post, or visitors who prefer a more flexible arrangement. Informal visits attract scholars at all stages of their academic careers.

Informal visitors may apply for a Reader’s Ticket to access library resources. Where possible, LML aims to meet with all visitors working in our field, although this is subject to existing commitments. Please let us know if you are planning a visit.

All visitors are responsible for their own costs and arranging accommodation.

Prospective visitors should email lml@law.cam.ac.uk with a CV and proposed dates. Applicants for formal visits should also submit a one-page research proposal.
