On Thursday 20 March 2025, LML hosted the Baron de Lancey lecture, which was delivered by Prof. Kimberly D. Krawiec (University of Virginia).

The Baron de Lancey Lecture is an annual public lecture hosted by the Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Law. It provides distinguished lawyers with a forum to debate their views on contemporary topics in medical law with a Cambridge audience.

This year, Professor Krawiec explored "repugnant transactions and taboo trades" — markets that are morally contested and sometimes even prohibited, such as sex work, commercial surrogacy, and the sale of organs, eggs, and sperm. She explored how we, as a society, decide what is up for sale and what is off-limits.

Turnout was very positive this year, with about 75 people attending in person and more than 100 joining us online.

The recording of the event is now available online via the Faculty of Law’s YouTube channel.
