LML welcomed Dr Julian März from the University of Zurich as a visiting scholar from 7 - 17 May 2024.
Dr. Julian W. März, M.D., Ph.D., LL.M., J.D., is a physician, lawyer, and bioethicist, and is currently working as a research fellow at the University of Zurich. His main research interests lie in the areas of biomedical innovation law, research ethics, and pharmaceutical pricing, with a particular focus on gene, cell, and tissue therapies, AI in pharmaceutical R&D, and innovative medicines for rare diseases. In addition, he is currently leading a curriculum development project of the World Health Organization (WHO) on the ethics of AI in rare disease and cancer diagnosis and treatment, and is acting as lead scientific advisor for the review and reform process of the Federal Law on the Genetic Testing of Humans (GUMG) by the Swiss federal government.
On the highlights of his visit, Dr März said:
"The research stay helped me advance the work on my habilitation thesis, which focuses on legal issues in clinical research on gene and nucleic acid-based therapies. In particular, the exchange with world-leading IP law experts helped me identify key unresolved patent law issues in the context of n-of-1 healthcare and clinical trials. Additionally, I engaged with experts at the PHG Foundation and Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) to better understand the regulation and organization of genetic and genomic testing in England. This experience is particularly valuable for my role as scientific advisor in the review process of the Federal Law on the Genetic Testing of Humans by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health."
LML was delighted to welcome Dr März as a visiting scholar, and look forward to future collaborations with him.
