The 2023 European Human Rights Law Conference was held at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Law from 28 September to 29 September 2023, with the theme of 'Human Rights: Prospects, Possibilities, Fears and Limitations'.

Led by Dr Kirsty Hughes, Dr Stevie Martin and Dr Stephanie Palmer, the conference was highly successful with more than 140 presentations and full venues. LML played a part in proceedings, with LML members Matt Jordan assisting conference organisation, and Stevie and Stephanie convening as well as presenting.

Presentations covered the full range of human rights issues with more than a dozen relevant to emerging medical technologies, reproductive rights, healthcare and biotechnology.

Presentations in the fields of healthcare and biotechnology addressed:

  • abused women and suicide (e.g. Dr Stevie Martin and Dr Stephanie Palmer in “Protecting Victims and Survivors of Domestic Abuse: The UK’s failure to comply with its obligations under the ECHR”);
  • genetic information (e.g. Dr Róise Connolly (OU) in “A Human Right to Access Genetic Information? Presenting the Case for a Disclosure-as-Default Framework in the UK”),
  • COVID-19 (e.g Ioanna Pervou (Democritus University of Thrace) in “Protecting Health at the Aftermath of Covid-19: a missed opportunity for the European Court of Human Rights?”) and
  • gene editing (e.g. Justyna Miszczyk (Jagiellonian) in “Human Rights in Emerging Epigenome Editing Technologies”).
