Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences

Faculty of Law

On 16th March 2023, the Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences hosted the annual Baron de Lancey public lecture. This year’s speaker was Professor Emily Jackson, a Professor of Law at the London School of Economics. Professor Jackson delivered a talk entitled ‘Assisted Dying: Slippery Slopes and Unintended Consequences’.

Professor Jackson discussed some of the many ethical, legal, and practical pitfalls in trying to legislate to legalise assisted dying. It was a fascinating talk that raised many complex issues.

The turnout was the largest in the Lecture’s history, with roughly 120 people attending in-person and more than 160 people tuning in to the live broadcast. There were many thought-provoking questions from attendees, demonstrating the importance of on-going conversations on this issue.

For those who were unable to make it to the lecture, recordings of the live broadcast can be found either on the University site, or via YouTube.

The Baron de Lancey Lecture series is kindly supported by the Ver Heyden de Lancey Fund.
