Unifying goals to mobilise global action on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are crucial for protecting lives now and in the future. This is the key message in a new commentary by LML Senior Research Associate, Dr Isaac Weldon, and co-authors.

The Bellagio Group for Accelerating AMR Action met in April 2024 to develop the ‘ambitious but achievable’ 1–10-100 unifying goals to tackle AMR. These goals aim to:

  • 1 Health: Promote a One Health approach to safeguard human health, animal welfare, agrifood systems, and the environment from drug-resistant microbes.
  • 10 million lives saved: Prevent and appropriately treat infections to save over 10 million lives by 2040.
  • 100% sustainable access: Ensure antimicrobials are available, affordable, and used prudently, while fostering innovation.

The authors argue that these unifying goals, compared to existing technical targets, have the advantages of focusing on prevention, encouraging multisectoral collaboration, promoting health equity, fostering innovation, and aligning with Sustainable Development Goals.
