In May, LML hosted a productive meeting with visiting academics from the University of São Paulo and Fiocruz. The visit formed part of Project ODYSSEY, a major research initiative examining the regulation of AI and digital health, led by the University of São Paulo’s Health Law Research Center, Fiocruz Brasilia School of Government, and the Brazilian Federal Ministry of Health.
Prof. Kathy Liddell (LML Director) and Dr Colin Mitchell (PHG Foundation) welcomed Prof. Fernando Aith, Prof. Roberta de Freitas Campos, Dr Marina de Neiva Borba, and Ms Ana Luisa Pereira Agudo Romão. The meeting focused on the international regulatory strand of Project ODYSSEY, with the visitors seeking deeper understanding of UK and EU frameworks in four key areas: health data (including UK GDPR, PECR, and the law of confidentiality), regulation of AI and AI-enabled medical devices, telehealth, and health technology assessment.
The discussion highlighted the shared challenges and opportunities in regulating AI-related technologies in health. The meeting was highly engaging and laid promising groundwork for further dialogue and collaboration between Cambridge and Brazilian institutions on legal and policy approaches to digital health.
