On Monday 8 June, several members of LML attended the first of two virtual CeBIL retreats, hosted by programme leaders at the University of Copenhagen. The annual CeBIL retreats are an opportunity to convene with other CeBIL collaborators, provide progress updates on each of the six CeBIL studies, and receive valuable feedback. The first virtual retreat focused on three studies: antimicrobial resistance, orphan drugs, and repurposing known drugs for new medical uses (led by LML).

Dr John Liddicoat (Senior Research Associate) provided the new uses project update. He outlined nine ongoing projects under the new uses umbrella, including:

  • The effectiveness of EU incentives for drug repositioning
  • The effects of additional market exclusivity for repositioned drugs
  • Noted increases in the number of second medical use patents
  • The relationship between clinical trials for first generic drugs and drug repositioning
  • The meaning of ‘significant clinical benefit’
  • The 2018 case of Bayer v NHS Darlington CCG
  • The impact of Covid-19 on drug repositioning

A second virtual retreat will follow on Friday 21 August 2020.
