Last year, the UK Government issued a call for views on artificial intelligence and IP. Dr John Liddicoat (Senior Research Associate) and Mr James Parish (CIPIL) made a short submission addressing AI inventorship.

On 23 March 2021, the government published its response to the views it received. The government quoted Dr Liddicoat and Mr Parish on what role they thought patents should play in R&D. The response also mentioned a study Dr Liddicoat and Mr Parish described to determine whether innovation is being hampered because patent law does not recognise AI as an inventor.

The full governmental response is available here.
